As the internship hiring process begins once again, we wanted to highlight the accomplishments of our last class of interns. Read on to learn more about the work of our inspiring interns and get a glimpse of what your summer could look like!
Hannah Stoch (Communications Intern) Hannah contributed to many of the Foundation’s social media and blog posts. She also worked on organizing the Foundation’s extensive photo archives, detailing a system to better navigate the Foundation’s visual library. Here she joined the Comms team to visit the Statue of Liberty’s crown on a media trip.
Hana Grief (American Family Immigration History Center (AFIHC) Intern) pictured below in the Great Hall, worked on an individual research project to investigate the evolution of celebrity culture in the era of Ellis Island. She looked extensively into Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball, a major gala that took place in 1966. She found that many of the attendees had ties to immigration and Ellis Island, including Andy Warhol and Herry Belafonte.
Eleanor Clay (American Family Immigration History Center (AFIHC) Intern) focused her summer research project on immigrant contributions to the iconic New York City skyline. She highlighted the stories of leading figures, including Louis J. Horowitz and John F. O’Rourke, as well as carpenters and riggers like Charles Watkins and Peter Koop. She emphasized the emotional connection of new immigrants arriving at Ellis Island looking upon a skyline designed by previous generations of immigrants, a powerful investigation on the contributions of immigrants to New York City and the United States more broadly.
Aviral Shrivastava (Finance & Administration Intern) focused his efforts on learning how to navigate finance and accounting projects. During his internship, he contributed to multiple administrative projects, including a proposal for a display in the Ellis Island Museum that shares immigrant stories in a suitcase, to symbolize the immigrant connection to travel. He also enjoyed the opportunity to attend the J.P. Morgan Payments Innovation Forum.
